Middle East Studies Profs Defend Rape Accused Tariq Ramadan

Middle East studies academics, such as Georgetown University’s John Esposito, UC Berkeley’s Hatem Bazian, and UCLA’s Khaled Abu-El Fadl, are defending Tariq Ramadan, the Islam scholar under investigation in France following rape allegations. Like Ramadan’s Islamist supporters, the open letter they’ve signed blames bigotry by asking, “Is there one form of justice for Muslims in France and another for everyone else?”

Cinnamon Stillwell analyzes Middle East studies academia in West Coast colleges and universities for Campus Watch. A San Francisco Bay Area native and graduate of San Francisco State University, she is a columnist, blogger, and social media analyst. Ms. Stillwell, a former contributing political columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, has written on a wide variety of topics, including the political atmosphere in American higher education, and has appeared as a guest on television and talk radio.
