The Rebranding of Islamic Jihad in the West
As language, activism, and media narratives evolve, ideas once widely understood as openly ideological are increasingly being reframed through the lenses of social justice, anti-colonialism, and political resistance. The concept of Islamic jihad is one such example. This podcast will examine how these shifts in messaging and presentation can reshape the way movements and ideologies are perceived by Western audiences, often with significant negative consequences.
Danny Burmawi will outline the role of universities, advocacy networks, and online platforms in shaping narratives, and explore how rhetoric, symbolism, and framing are influencing public understanding of jihadist ideology. He will also discuss why this rebranding resonates with certain audiences and what it means for policymakers, communities, and the broader public conversation about extremism.
