“Israel and the Hashemites: A Complex Story” with Eran Lerman

Israel and the Hashemites: A Complex Story

Israel and Jordan share one of the Middle East’s most important—and complicated—strategic relationships. In this episode of the Middle East Forum Podcast, host Lauri Regan speaks with Col. (res.) Dr. Eran Lerman about the history of Israel’s relationship with the Hashemite dynasty, from the Weizmann-Faisal understanding of 1919 to the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty.

Drawing on both his professional experience and his personal connection to the subject—his father was a prisoner of war in Jordan in 1948—Lerman examines the two countries’ common interests, divergent perspectives, and the pressures shaping their relationship today. He also considers how the war with Iran has altered the regional landscape and what may lie ahead for Israel-Jordan relations.

Eran Lerman is Vice President of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security (JISS) and an expert on Israel’s foreign relations and the Middle East. He previously served as deputy director for foreign policy and international affairs at Israel’s National Security Council and held senior positions in IDF Military Intelligence for more than 20 years. He also spent eight years as director of the Israel and Middle East office of the American Jewish Committee. Lerman holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and a mid-career MPA from Harvard University.
