Swedes Weigh in on Cultural Diversity

Nine out of ten Swedish people disapprove of wearing veils that cover the face to school or to work. This according to new figures from the Diversity Barometer, a study that Uppsala University carries out annually.

The study also found that 60 percent of Swedes believe that it is okay to wear religious garb, like hijabs and shaylas, to work, so long as the garments do not hide the face.

The study comes on the coattails of a brouhaha after Swedish education minister Jan Björklund, suggested earlier in the week that head masters should have the right to ban burkas and niqabs from being worn in schools.

The number of Swedes who are extremely opposed to diversity has risen to 5.7 percent, mostly among men and those who have not gone on to higher education, according to the study.
