Subway restaurants in Burton and Swadlincote have not cut ham and bacon from their menus despite almost 200 stores in the UK selling halal-only meat.
Subways in The Octagon shopping centre and High Street, Burton, as well as on The Pipeworks, Swadlincote, will continue with its normal menus.
However, in response to the UK’s ‘diverse multicultural population’ and calls from its Muslim customers, 185 Subway restaurants will sell Halal-only meat.
Under Islamic law, pork is forbidden and while other meat can be eaten, it must be sourced, slaughtered and processed according to strict rules.
Subway said all halal meat served in its branches has come from animals that were stunned before being slaughtered.
A spokesman said: “All our suppliers comply with EU animal welfare legislation as a minimum and we require suppliers of Halal products to adopt the stunning of animals prior to their slaughter. All Halal meats are certified by the appropriate Halal authorities.
“All Halal Subway stores have numerous signs stating that they serve Halal.”
