The number of reports about discrimination made to the Dutch police fell by around one fifth last year, Trouw reported on Wednesday.
In particular, the number of reports of anti-Muslim discrimination were also down by one fifth, after tripling in 2015, the paper said.
‘We expected the number of complaints about anti-Muslim discrimination to rise again, so this is a puzzle,’ police spokesman Joop Kemperman told the paper.
Last year police put the rise in anti-Muslim discrimination down to the Paris attacks and the surge in asylum claims made by people from Islamic countries.
Race and skin colour were the issue in 42% of complaints received by the police and many of last year’s related to television presenter turned politician Sylvana Simons. Some 7% of complaints were related to religion.
