Salford parent slapped with banning order to stop them taking their daughter abroad to be circumcised It is the first order of its kind in Greater Manchester and authorities now have the power to remove her parents' passports if they attempt to take her out of the UK
A parent in Salford has been handed Greater Manchester's first female circumcision banning order.
The order attempts to protect their daughter from being taken abroad for the barbaric procedure, which is seen in some cultures as a way of reducing the libido of young girls to ensure they remain virgins before marriage.
The Female Genital Mutilation Prevention Order gives authorities the power to remove her parents' passports if they suspect the girl is about to be taken out of the country for the procedure, which is carried out in some communities in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
