The Phoenix rooms of the University Union at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay were transformed Tuesday into a sampling of Arabic culture. Arabic Day, sponsored by the UW-Green Bay Arabic Club, allowed patrons to learn about traditional foods, art, music, decorative henna painting and a traditional Bedouin tent setting.
The event was intended to expose people to Middle Eastern culture. More than 300 million people in the world speak Arabic.
Ilham Ashour, who teaches an Arabic Language II class at UWGB, and her students dressed in authentic clothing as they educated those in attendance.
The day’s lessons also extended to fashion. Ashour explained that the metallurgy of the region typically uses 24-karat gold as opposed to the often-used 10- to 14-karat gold in the United States.
