This might be so. According to this New York Post column, Columbia University may be giving tenure to an anti-Semitic homophobe. Joseph Massad, an Arab Studies Professor, is under review for tenure for the second time. The first time, he was rejected by his peers.
Massad uses revisionist history to try to slander the Jewish state. While some may say that hating the Jewish state is not anti-Semitic, I believe that it is.
Some may use the comparison that not all Jews belong to Israel and Israel is not a reflection on all Jews. One person, Truth Seeker, a blogger, used the comparison that people may hate George W. Bush, but that doesn’t mean that they hate America.
To this, I say that when you see people who hate America, I mean really hate America, what do they do? They burn effigies of Bush, burn the flag, etc. George Bush represents what people hate about America: he is from Texas, he was an oilman, he went to the Ivy League, he’s rich, and was the most powerful man in the world. Bush is just a vehicle that people use to hate America. When people burn an effigy of Bush, they are simply hating a symbol of America, not just disagreeing with Bush’s tax policy or approach to education.
When people accuse the Jewish state of being fascist or comparable to Nazism, they’re not criticizing Israel on legitimate policy issues. They are hating what Israel stands for: everything that the Jews as a people have accomplished in the 5,000 years they have thrived. Israel represents an acknowledgment that the Jewish people will not quit, will not falter, and will not be harassed into submission. Any notion that the Jewish state should not exist is equivalent to saying the Jewish people should not exist.
People who hate Jews take it out on the Jewish state. It’s anti-Semitism mascarading as sympathy or “fairness” or whatever Palestinian sympathizers wish to call it.
As for the Columbia University conflict, I would expect nothing less from such a liberal institution…
