Paul Beran, from Harvard’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies, gave a presentation on the Israel-Palestine conflict and spoke about his experience living in the West Bank to Brimmer and May students in Ms. Rona Mattock’s Upper School class, Viewpoints on the Other: United States, the Middle East and North Africa. The course serves as an introduction to the history, demography, and cultures of Egypt, Iraq, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the Palestinian territories, and students explore and analyze each country’s value systems, power structures, and viewpoints on the other by way of critical media analysis.
Beran is a researcher, writer, and teacher on civil society in the Middle East region and the West, Middle East politics, and regional human rights and development. He teaches the Harvard course, Introduction to the Conflict in Israel and the Occupied Territories and directs the Egypt Forum, a program of training for K-12 educators on Middle East region studies and Egypt. He has served as a consultant on global education and development programs in Jordan, Israel, the West Bank, Egypt, Sudan, and the United States.
Mattocks of Cambridge recently completed a Harvard University run program on Middle East region studies called the Egypt Forum and traveled to Egypt with a group of teachers.
