Campus Watch Weekly Update

Campus Watch reports the following from March 1 -- March 15, 2021:

Howler of the Month

“It is certainly the case that using language like ‘an ugly Israeli occupation of previous Palestinians’ would be enough to keep someone from being hired at most American universities. This is because many pro-Israel professors and administrators (as well as those hoping for big donations from pro-Israel donors) are corrupt, and are entirely willing to misuse their positions to silence voices that are inconvenient for Israeli propaganda.”

Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the Univ. of Michigan, on Harvard’s refusal to award a tenured position to Cornel West, Victor S. Thomas Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard; West (quoted by Cole) blamed the decision on his support for Palestinians. “Is Harvard Denying Tenure to Cornel West over His Views on Palestine?” Informed Comment, Feb. 24, 2021.

We Couldn’t Have Said It Better

“Nothing I’d learned during my years in the ivory towers of academia had prepared me for the reality I encountered in an Iranian prison.”

Wang Xiyue, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and doctoral candidate at Princeton University who spent 40 months in an Iranian prison on false espionage charges, on how the Middle East studies establishment’s whitewashed view of Iran as a peace-seeking victim of American Orientalist imperialism allowed him to become a victim of Tehran’s corrupt, vicious regime. “What I Learned in An Iranian Prison,” The Wall Street Journal, February 24, 2021.
