After Illinois’s Administrative Fiasco, Questions Remain [on Steven G. Salaita]

The summary dismissal of Steven G. Salaita from an offered tenured position at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign over posts on his Twitter account critical of Israel’s military actions against Palestinians in Gaza has been quite a roller-coaster ride, and faculty members elsewhere appear to be bracing for their turn. On September 11, Illinois’s trustees voted against approving Salaita’s appointment, just as Chancellor Phyllis M. Wise had told him they would when she de facto fired him in a letter on August 1. So we are back at the start of the ride after six weeks of ups and downs and twists and turns.
