Will UCLA Dispense with ‘Eurocentric’ Terms ‘Middle East’ and ‘Near East’?

A Daily Bruin columnist has declared “Middle East” and “Near East” Eurocentric terms. She urges UCLA to rename its Center for Near Eastern Studies the “Center for Southwest Asian and North African Studies” in order to “challenge the Orientalist and postcolonial systems that reinforce the notion of the ‘barbaric Middle East’” and “the harmful stereotypes that exoticize and misappropriate their cultures.” The revolution devours its own.
