What Houston Demonstrators Want The Egyptian Consulate To Know

A rally underway in front of the Egyptian Consulate on Westheimer was staged this afternoon to protest the killing of civilians in Cairo. It’s organized by the Houston chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America and the Muslim American Society, Houston office.

The group is of about 50 demonstrators chanting, “We are civilians. We have rights!”

One protester Naeem Baig says, “We’re gathered here today to stand with the pro-democracy protesters in Egypt and also to send a message to the consulate here that the Muslim-American community is against all the atrocities that are happening in Egypt — all the killing and brutal murder of people that is happening in Egypt.”

Another protester Wahed Wasel says, “We are here today to support human rights in Egypt and to support democracy and to support the right of the Egyptian people to elect their government and to stop the bloodshed which has been done for more than two months by the military and the police against civilian people.”

The American Egyptian community of Houston plans a demonstration and march on Sunday afternoon starting at St. Mary & Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church on Lakeview Haven. That group is denouncing attacks against Christians in Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood.
