Chancellor Christian Stocker from Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) reversed his party's position in late August 2026 to back a constitutional ban on "political Islam" — a policy his coalition had previously rejected when proposed by the opposition Freedom Party (FPÖ). Stocker said Islam interpreted "in a political sense" is incompatible with Austrian democracy, while stressing that freedom of religious belief and practice would remain protected.
