A meeting aimed in part at helping Tri-City elected officials become better acquainted with the local Muslim community was planned Friday in West Richland.
The session also was meant to help Tri-City area Muslims become more engaged in government.
Similar meetings will be held in the Tri-Cities in the future, with the next one planned for September.
They’re part of a initiative by the state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, a civil liberties and advocacy organization.
Arsalan Bukhari, executive director of CAIR-WA, was in town this week for the session. The meetings “provide a mutual benefit,” he said.
The West Richland session was at the Islamic Center of Tri-Cities. Benton County Prosecutor Andy Miller and a staffer from the office of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., were scheduled to attend. The next meeting is Sept. 11 in Kennewick, with different leaders invited to participate.
