Lawmakers filed bills Thursday aimed at suspending refugee resettlement from six Muslim-majority countries and North Korea, and barring local governments and other groups from becoming “sanctuary cities.”
The filings come on the final day for legislators to submit their legislation.
Aiming to take a proactive approach to security issues they’d perceived elsewhere, Republican legislators backed the proposals which would suspend refugee resettlement from countries listed under President Donald Trump’s travel ban. The U.S. Supreme Court is set to weigh the legality of the ban later this year.
Other proposals would create penalties for law enforcement entities and local governments whose policies protect undocumented people or refuse to work with federal immigration authorities.
