Non-Muslims from Newcastle’s west end have been fasting to see how hard it is for the Islamic community during Ramadan.
The Islamic Diversity Centre invited the local community to take part in their daily practice of consuming no ffod or water during their holy month, and in returned rewarded them with a free feast at the Ma’ida Restaurant in Walbottle, Newcastle.
Abu Tayeb, from the Islamic Diversity Centre, said the organisation wants to educate people in the North East of the daily lives of Muslims.
He said: “Some definitely found it harder than others, but Muslims do this for 30 days every year.
“As a Muslim, we do it to please God and we try and get closer to God, that is the whole point is sacrifice.”
One person who fasted for the day was Labour Councillor for Newburn Hilary Franks. She said: “It really was an extremely interesting experience.
“The main thing was getting out of the habit of eating all the time.”
