A group in Maine is trying to get a referendum on next year’s ballot to outlaw female genital mutilation in Maine.
Thursday, the Prevent FGM in Maine Political Action Committee filed a request to collect signatures with the Secretary of State’s office.
According to the group, the question on the ballot would ask voters if they want to prevent female genital mutilation, or “FGM,” in Maine.
FGM is already illegal federally, but Maine is one of several states that have not passed a separate state law about FGM.
