Islamic community stands for making Easter an official feast

Muslim community of Russia backed up the idea of celebrating Easter at official federal level.

“Orthodox make a majority here and have good reason to celebrate Easter at federal level,” First Deputy Chairman of Muslim Religious Administration of Russian European Region Damir Gizatullin has said on Wednesday.

Thus, he commented on Petersburg lawmakers address to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev with the request to make Orthodox Easter all-Russian feast.

The Council of Muftis representative stressed that religious feasts unite people and “celebrating them people come to their origins, traditions.”

“It’s very important, today it will help us overcome economic crisis,” the representative of Russian Islamic community believes.

Gizatullin didn’t agree that making Easter official would violate the principle of religion separated from the state. “Believers are not separated from society and state,” he stressed.
