Decision on biggest mosque in the UK, planned for east London, due today

A group behind the plans for a new mosque proposed for east London, named Abbey Mills Mosque or the Riverine Centre, complete with room for 10,000 people to pray, will hear whether their building application was successful today.

Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic missionary group, has been attempting to get planning permission for their Newham mosque for 10 years.

The space will include a room for up to 7,440 men and separate space for 2,000 women to pray.

It will also be four times the size of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Many locals are opposing the building on the grounds that the mosque is simply too big.

If the plans go ahead, the Abbey Mills Mosque will be one of the largest in Europe, and the biggest mosque in the UK.

Tablighi Jamaat has previously been accused of promoting radical Islamic views.

A spokesperson from the group said that it: “refrains from political or controversial activities and stands for democracy and freedom” and that it “promotes social and religious integration,” reported the BBC.
