Local civil rights groups have welcomed the Dearborn Heights Police Department’s recent decision to provide halal food to Muslims who are detained in their custody.
In recent months, members of the Council on American Islamic Relations of Michigan has held meetings with the Dearborn Heights mayor and police chief to discuss the need for the City’s police force to better accommodate the community. These meetings have led to the recent halal food accommodation.
CAIR-MI is also seeking similar accommodations from other law enforcement entities in Michigan and says the Police Department’s decision is a testament to recognizing the religious sensitivities of Muslims.
