Controversial Edmonton ads targeting Muslims won’t be reviewed after being pulled

A national advertising watchdog confirms it will not review controversial “honour killing” ads that were pulled off buses by Edmonton Transit this week.

The controversial ads - paid for by the American Freedom Defence Initiative and Stop Islam of America - read: “Is your family threatening you? Is there a Fatwa on your Head?”

The ad also featured seven photos of young women, some wearing hijabs. Smaller text read: “Muslim Girls’ Honor (sp.) Killed by Their Families.”

Advertising Standards Canada said since the ads were pulled, there is nothing to review.

Scott Gibb, a sales director with Pattison Outdoor, says the group will have its money - $2,500 for all five ads - refunded.

Coun. Amarjeet Sohi, who urged transit staff to pull the signs, said the ads targeted “one particular group.” He also said the group supports “anti-islamic rhetoric” and finds ways to “demean and degrade people of Islamic faith.”
