A Bristol photography exhibition has scooped a top award for promoting diversity.
The show, called Building the Bridge, was designed to give people an insight into the diversity of Muslim communities.
It beat over 200 other entrants to claim first prize in the Awards for Bridging Cultures (ABCs) run by the Institute of Community Cohesion.
The exhibition ran throughout January 2010 and featured images of 12 “ordinary Muslims living in Bristol”, including a doctor and a police officer.
It also contained narrative from them talking about their experiences of being a Muslim in the UK.
Zaheer Shabir from exhibition creators, the Building the Bridge Board, said: “Over the year, this project has enabled Bristol’s Muslim community to celebrate diversity and culture thus adding to the richness of Bristol.
“We are all very proud of this national achievement.”
The Building the Bridge Board is a group made up of Muslims from across Bristol, as well as representatives from the police and council.
The group’s aim is to “improve understanding between communities, religions and cultures”.
Inspector Chris Regan said: “We are really pleased that such a positive piece of work has been recognised.
“Following our success at the ABCs we’re planning a relaunch of the exhibition early in the new year so more people can get the opportunity to see it.”
