The St. Lucie County Commission unanimously decides to allow plans for an Islamic cemetery to move forward. The vote Tuesday night was 5 to 0.
The commissioners approved the rezoning request that could allow for an Islamic cemetery in a neighborhood.
Last month, the St. Lucie County Planning and Zoning Commission approved the request by Adel Nefzi. Nefzi wants to rezone land along Christensen Road south of Midway Rd.
The land was zoned residential, but it will now be zoned to allow an Islamic school and possibly a cemetery.
It is a well-practiced Muslim tradition to only bury Muslims alongside other Muslims.
