Perhaps the most visibly upset person this week about the controversy surrounding a poem displayed at the downtown Aurora Public Library is the person whose name is above the front door.
Gina Santori choked up as she spoke at the Aurora Library Board meeting in which library officials again apologized for the display of “Hijab means Jihad,” a poem by Lewis University philosophy professor George Miller.
The library displayed it in the first floor atrium of its main downtown library at Benton and River Streets for about three weeks as part of a display of about 15 of Miller’s poems and photography. Miller has maintained the poem was meant to be satirical.
After it was part of the April 21 Fox River Arts Ramble throughout downtown, enough people complained in person and through social media that the library apologized for its display and took it down.
