Calls are increasing for Nicolas Anelka to be banned for making a gesture described by Jewish groups as a form of Nazi salute.
The French Sports Minister, Valérie Fourneyron, immediately condemned Anelka for performing the "disgusting" gesture to celebrate scoring the first of his two goals during Saturday's 3-3 draw with West Ham.
Ms Fourneyron's predecessor, Chantal Jouanno, who served as Sports Minister under President Nicolas Sarkozy, has now demanded that Anelka be punished. "The 'quenelle' is a Nazi gesture that is clearly anti-Semitic," Ms Jouanno said. "There is no point prevaricating over how it should be interpreted. Anelka deserves to be sanctioned."
