Ahmed Mohamed honored by Muslim civil rights group

The Texas teen most Americans know because he built a homemade clock was in Arlington Saturday night to pick up an award.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations honored Ahmed Mohamed as “American Muslim of the year.”

He told the group he wants to fight for justice.

“I just want to stop discrimination...not just for religions...but for all races as well,” he told the crowd.

Back in September, the 14-year-old was handcuffed, detained and suspended from his Dallas area high school after he brought a homemade clock to school one of his teachers thought looked like a bomb.

Police never charged the teen. The move sparked claims that he had been singled out because he is Muslim.

Ahmed drew support from more than a million on Twitter...including President Obama who tweeted: “Cool clock Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House?”

We got a chance to speak to the teen one on one. He is quiet...perhaps even a bit shy, but says he is really looking forward to his trip to the White House on Monday.

“I’m really excited to go the White House on astronomy night...and to meet a lot of great people...” Ahmed told us.

Excited he says, because he is interested in all things science.

“Anything related to space and time...” said Ahmed.

President Obama launched Astronomy Night back in 2009. It brings scientists and students to the South Lawn for some stargazing.

When we asked Ahmed what he would talk to the President about...he said he would ask for a White House pen.
