Several restaurants in the area are serving meat killed in the traditional Islamic way.
Halal, which is Arabic for permissible, means meat which adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the Qur’an.
It involves the killing of animals through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe.
Stunning is often used before the animal is killed.
Most Muslims will not eat non-halal meat.
Dominos is one of several fast-food chains which serves halal meat, though its restaurants are not halal-certified.
A spokesman for the pizza chain said: “While we no longer have any halal stores, all our chicken, with the exception of our chicken wings, is halal slaughtered.”
“We would like to reassure customers that all our chicken is stunned and we take our responsibility to animal welfare very seriously.
“None of our other meats are halal.”
However, none of the meat at McDonalds is halal.
A spokesman said: “We respect all cultures and religions and understand the availability of halal meat can be an important consideration for some customers.
“However, for many operational reasons, none of the meat supplied to McDonald’s UK is certified as halal.
“We implement rigorous standards governing animal welfare practices and the quality, hygiene, safety and traceability of our food.
“These standards include the mandatory stunning of all animals prior to slaughter and do not include any references to halal requirements in the UK.”
No meat available at Burger King is halal.
In a statement, Greggs said: “In common with much of the food industry we use a range of suppliers, some of whom provide chicken in compliance with the HFA (Halal Food Authority) but cannot be marketed as halal because we do not provide separation in either our shops or our bakeries.
“All of our poultry complies with our animal welfare standards which ensures that the rearing and slaughtering of the birds is consistent with humane standards and includes pre–stunning.
“We ensure that these standards are maintained through a combination of internal and independent audit.”
While Subway does have halal-only stores, none of the Burton or South Derbyshire stores are certified.
