A hospital consultant has sharply attacked the director of public prosecutions for bowing to pressure in mounting the first prosecution for female genital mutilation in the UK against a hospital doctor.
Speaking hours after a jury took less than 30 minutes to find Dr Dhanuson Dharmasena, 32, not guilty of subjecting a mother to FGM after he delivered her baby, Dr Katrina Erskine, consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Homerton Hospital in London, said she was left with no faith in British justice.
In an interview with the Guardian Erskine said: "It is ludicrous to conflate anything a doctor or midwife may do at the time of delivery to a woman who has already suffered FGM with FGM itself, and it is insulting to women who have actually suffered FGM.
