South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright has resigned from the Labour Party after it threatened to suspend him over the Rotherham abuse scandal but has vowed to remain in his PCC role.
The Labour party called for him to resign as PCC and threatened to suspend him from the Party if he had not done so by the morning, however on his website Mr Wright refused to leave the role.
In a statement he said: "I formally tender my resignation from the Labour Party. However, I remain committed to, and intend to remain in, my role as an Independent Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire.
