A national summit and legal review will form part of a federal government crackdown on the "barbaric practice" of female genital mutilation in Australia.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a package of measures on Tuesday night aimed at combating the practice.
"We do not know how widespread this practice is in Australia but we know there have been instances, and anecdotal evidence suggests these are not isolated," Ms Gillard said in a statement.
