Crown Set to Conclude Arguments in Diab Case

Federal Crown prosecutors are expected to conclude their arguments Monday on why the extradition hearing for accused terrorist Hassan Diab should continue. The Crown began arguments Tuesday following a week of submissions by Diab’s lawyers urging the Crown to stay extradition proceedings against Diab. Diab, a former University of Ottawa sociology professor, is facing extradition to France to stand trial in the murder of four people who were killed Oct. 3, 1980, in an explosion outside the Copernic synagogue in Paris. Diab’s lawyer, Donald Bayne, has argued that the French evidence against Diab has been misrepresented and manipulated to strengthen the Crown’s case. But prosecutor Claude LeFranÁois argues Bayne is accusing the French of obstruction of justice, and that there is no evidence to support Bayne’s allegation that the French acted in bad faith.
