The new head of the Hebrew Language Academy Charter School doesn't speak Hebrew.
Maureen Gonzalez-Campbell, whose appointment as principal was announced Monday, speaks Spanish.
"It would be optimal to have a principal who spoke the language," said school publicist Dan Gerstein. "It's not in any way essential."
The new principal plans to take intensive Hebrew at Middlebury College this summer as part of her preparation for the job, Gerstein said.
Brooklyn's Khalil Gibran International Academy, a controversial Arabic-themed school, was briefly headed by a Jewish principal who did not speak Arabic.
Hebrew Language Charter School officials Monday highlighted Gonzalez-Campbell's long résumé in education.
She also served as principal of Public School 104 in Queens.
