“The Limits of the Red-Green Alliance” with Asra Nomani
There are over 8,000 Islamic organizations in the United States, of which Middle East Forum data indicates at least a quarter operate under some degree of Islamist influence.
But despite all these groups and many millions of American Muslims, public rallies for Islamist causes rarely exceed a few hundred participants. Conflict with Iran did not produce a furious grassroots reaction from American Shia Islamists. And Sunni Islamist commentators have reprimanded American Muslims for apparent apathy towards topics such as Gaza and Kashmir. Indeed, only a small handful of Islamist organizations were involved with the pro-Hamas and anti-Israel encampments in 2024. Consequently, when Hamas terror leaders expressed gratitude to their Western supporters in 2024, they praised the efforts of American leftists; not American Muslims.
What explains this apparent lack of Islamist grassroots street power? Why is it that just a handful of Islamist-run groups are actively involved in the infamous famous red-green alliance? And what does this mean for the future of Islamism in America?
