Job Announcement: Middle East Quarterly Managing Editor

The Middle East Forum (MEF) is hiring a half-time, salaried Managing Editor for the Middle East Quarterly.

Job Description:

The Middle East Quarterly (MEQ) publishes original research mostly on contemporary topics in electronic format. Each issue contains four articles about 4,000 words long, plus book reviews and occasional other contents, amounting in total to roughly 20,000 words.

Responsibilities:

The Managing Editor has three main responsibilities: day-to-day management of manuscripts and reviews; copy-editing, design, and layout; and serving as the primary contact for authors, editors, book publishers, et al. In more detail:

  • Manage communications with authors, including acknowledgment of manuscripts, notice of rejection/acceptance, back and forth on subsequent drafts, and copyright letters.
  • Track the flow of manuscripts and ideas, and log communications with authors and editors.
  • Send books for review and communicate with book reviewers.
  • Copy-edit articles and book reviews and apply the MEQ style; format footnotes.
  • Locate photographs to illustrate text and write captions.
  • Determine pullouts for each article to highlight main points.
  • Lay out each issue by placing text, footnotes, headlines, subheads, photos, captions, and pullouts into the design.
  • Close the issue: proofread final versions; create PDF; send material for posting at MEForum.org; manage honoraria for authors.

In addition, the Managing Editor may be asked from time to time to edit other materials for the Forum.

Qualifications:

  • Agreement with the Forum’s outlook (click here for details).
  • Familiarity with the Middle East, Islamism, U.S. foreign policy, and related issues.
  • Experience with managing a publication and copy-editing; familiarity with word processing and design programs.
  • Proficiency in English, bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to take initiative, plan, multitask, prioritize work schedules, work with a team, and meet tight deadlines. Attention to detail. Organizational and communication skills.

Location: Remote, anywhere in the world.

Starting date: July 15, 2023.

Compensation: Non-profit competitive.
