‘Fitna’, an Arab phrase for the word ‘ordeal’, mixes images of victims of terrorist attacks with verses from the Quran. The movie also shows murdered Dutch film-maker Theo van Gogh speaking about a possible attempt to murder him. Van Gogh was killed in 2004.
According to Dutch media reports, Wilders wants to stop what he calls the ‘islamization’ of the Dutch society. The Dutch cabinet has already seen the movie, the Dutch news agency ANP has reported.
The Dutch government anticipates a major international backlash as a result of the movie. It has already prepared embassies, especially those in Arab countries, on how to handle situations arising from the film’s publication.
Wilders is a member of the Dutch parliament for the PVV, the Dutch Freedom Party.
Wilders told Dutch journalists he hopes that the film will not trigger riots. Last week, the Dutch flag was burnt during a demonstration in Afghanistan, together with a puppet that was supposed to resemble Wilders.
“My film is not intended to create a mess,” he said. “Less islam is a choice for freedom.”
Wilders said he hopes that the film will trigger a debate in- and outside the Netherlands on the disadvantages of islam.
