Schools in Swansea and Carmarthenshire do not knowingly serve halal meat to their pupils it has been revealed.
The Evening Post asked our local education authorities whether the halal meat — meat that has been prepared in a particular way to meet the requirements of both Muslim and Jewish practices — was served up in school canteens.
The issue has arisen after some major chains, such as Costa and Pizza Express admitted having sold halal meat to unknowing customers.
The revelations came as a group of Conservatives has tabled an amendment calling for “compulsory labelling” to prevent people “unwittingly” eating the meat of animals slaughtered in accordance with Islamic or Jewish religious law.
A Swansea Council spokesman said: “We make halal meat available in our schools to cater for Muslim pupils.
“We have never knowingly served halal meat in our schools to non-Muslim pupils.”
A spokeswoman for Carmarthenshire council said: “We do not knowingly purchase any halal meat within the Carmarthenshire school meals service, however consideration will be made to source such products in the event that we receive a written request from a parent.”
Neath Port Talbot council, on the other hand, did not respond to a request for a comment.
