Rotherham’s Muslims urged to report hate crime

Rotherham’s Muslim community is being urged to report prejudice or abuse under a new initiative being launched in the north of England.

Organisers of the Tell MAMA campaign say anti-Muslim feeling and crime is growing, but they are urging victims not to suffer in silence.

The Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks campaign has set up a website. www.tellmamauk.org, where abuse and hate crime can be reported.

Spokesman Faisal Hanif said Victims could describe the abuse suffered and add the location of the attack so that MAMA could analyse places where attacks took place and identify issues like Far Right activity.

Victims would also be referred for support to organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch, Crimestoppers, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau or Victim Support.

He said that Tell MAMA had brought 13 prosecutions had and assisted 540 people over alleged hate incidents.

The initiative is being publicised at mosques and community centres across the north of England.
