Purple Heart ceremony set for Nov. 5 victims

Victims of the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting on post will receive Purple Heart medals during an April 10 ceremony at III Corps, Fort Hood officials confirmed Wednesday.

The 2015 National Defense Authorization Act approved a change to the requirements for the medal. Typically given to those wounded or killed in action, the change makes victims of an attack inspired or motivated by a U.S. State Department-designated foreign terrorist organization eligible for the medal. Last month, the Army approved the awards.

Civilians wounded or killed during the Nov. 5, 2009, attack are now eligible for the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Defense of Freedom.

Officials said they have not confirmed who will be honored during the on-post ceremony.
