Exclusive research for LBC suggests that only half of Londoners would be comfortable with a Muslim Mayor.
Labour’s Sadiq Khan and Sayeed Kamall of the Conservatives are standing to be candidates for their party in next year’s Mayoral Election.
But LBC’s poll by YouGov reveals only 55% would be comfortable with a Muslim Mayor, while 31% would be uncomfortable.
Peter Kellner from YouGov explained to LBC: “There’s a very clear age gap here.
“If you ask people in their 20s, around 2/3rds are comfortable and only around 20% less comfortable.
“If you look at the over 60s, then more of them are uncomfortable than comfortable.
“So there is the problem for a Muslim candidate amongst older voters, but much less of a problem for younger voters.”
Elsewhere, the poll for LBC also reveals that 1 in 10 people would be uncomfortable or don’t know if they would want a female Mayor.
And remarkably, 3% of women said they would be uncomfortable with a female Mayor.
Tessa Jowell and Diane Abbott are both standing to be the Labour candidate for London Mayor.
