Pennsylvania does not criminalize female genital mutilation

A recent federal court decision that held the federal ban against female genital mutilation is unconstitutional may put more pressure on Rep. Thomas P. Murt to get his bill outlawing the practice in Pennsylvania pushed through the general assembly.

Pennsylvania is one of 24 states that do not have FGM identified as a crime.

Murt, R-Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, had introduced a bill outlawing FGM in the commonwealth in 2017 and again in 2018. The current bill passed the House unanimously in October and now is before the Senate.
