A leading Muslim cleric says an Irishman jailed for two-and-a-half years for sending funds to IS should have got locked up for longer.

Hassan Bal, 26, who also attempted to travel to Syria to fight, was caged after he admitted unlawfully transferring €400 for use by IS and seeking money for the group.

Shayk Umar al-Qadri, the chair of the Irish Muslim Peace & Integration Council, called for a de-radicalisation programme to be brought into Irish prisons.

And he insisted Bal should have received more jail time.

He told the Irish Sun: “I think he deserved more than just two-and-a-half years, but under certain conditions. Most people get radicalised online and in prison.
