A group of South African Muslims, upset about a series of anti-Islamic groups on Facebook, have created an alternative: Muslimbook.com.
The new website is almost identical to Facebook, offering users a chance to interact with each other - but in a way that is respectful of Islamic laws and conventions.
The site’s close resemblance to Facebook is to ensure the migration from one to the other is easy for users, say its creators.
Its front page offers users the chance to “connect and share with the people in your life”, and is decorated with small icons of people wearing scarves and veils.
One of its creators, Zaid al Mansouri, says on the site that the theme is registered and does not infringe any copyright.
Several anti-Islamic groups have been created on Facebook, including one called “I hate Islam” and another which mocks Muslim women for wearing veils.
Other Islam-themed social networking sites already exist, including Madina.com.
