The Islamic Centre of Ireland will march today on Dublin’s O’Connell Street in protest at the murder of three Irish citizens in Tunisia last month.
The centre says the Not In My Name march aims to show that the “murderous campaign” by the Islamic State terrorist group is “absolutely against the teachings of Islam”.
Shaykh Umar Al-Qadri, CEO of the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council called on those who observe the faith to get involved.
“Muslims marched against the caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in Dublin few years ago. The terrorists are damaging Islam and Muslims far more than the caricatures and Islamophobia is increasing rapidly due to the atrocities of terrorists.
“If Muslims can march against caricatures that do not damage Islam, then why can Muslims not protest against ISIS that undermine Islamic teachings. Silence of Muslims may wrongfully be interpreted by some as silent approval of ISIS.”
Imams from all over Ireland will address the participants of the 1pm protest. They will also hold 2 minute silence in memory of the three Irish victims of last month’s attack on a holiday resort in Tunisia.
There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and share their concerns about extremism, organisers say.
