Halal seminar to debate issues

Eblex will focus on the current opportunities and challenges in the halal sector in a seminar later this month.

The Eblex Halal Seminar, taking place on 17 March at Chesford Grange, Warwickshire, will involve a number of presentations from industry experts. Topics covered include recent research on halal slaughter, marketing activity for the sector, global opportunities for exports, consumer perceptions of halal products, and dietary health.

A question-and-answer session will be held at the end of the event, with senior Eblex staff responding to delegates’ queries.

Dr Phil Hadley, Eblex head of supply chain business development, said: “We recognise the importance and value halal adds to the sheep sector in particular. As a levy body, we are working with the industry and other interested parties on the issues and challenges that halal presents.

“It cannot have escaped anyone’s attention that halal and issues relating to religious slaughter in a wider context have recently been making headlines and attracting political interest. The topic of non-stun slaughter, for example, was only last week the subject of a debate at Westminster, as was labelling and consumer demand for such products.

“It is therefore timely for us to hold a seminar on halal to help ensure that further debate on the subject is properly and fully informed.”
