German university closes prayer room after segregation row

A German university has announced that it is closing its interfaith prayer room after Muslim students tried to make women wear veils and use a segregated area.

The administration of Dortmund’s Technical University says it is closing its ‘room of silence’ due to repeated serious breaches of the German constitution and the student union’s terms of use for the room.

German daily Rheinische Post quoted a university spokeswoman Friday saying that some Muslim students had violated the requirement to treat men and women equally.

The university administration said in an open letter dated Wednesday that the room may be used as a baby care room in the future.

Officials in Germany have emphasized the need for migrants to integrate into German society and abide by the country’s constitution.
