The Baw Baw Shire Council has issued a statement in response to hate mail it has received from members of an anti-Islamic and anti-halal Facebook page.
The shire had feared a spokesperson condemning the hate mail and threatening comments would become the target of threats.
However, a statement released on the shire’s own Facebook page yesterday attributed a statement to chief executive Helen Anstis.
It says the comments that say the shire is discriminating against non-halal certified businesses and attempting to make the shire sharia compliant are misinformed.
It says the council will continue to support local businesses through its halal program.
