Bay Area Muslims invite people of all faiths to join a prayer for rain

On Saturday, Bay Area Muslims will pray for rain in a special service open to the public at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

The event is sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The rain prayer will follow shortly after early afternoon congregational prayer that begins at 1:30 p.m.

“When God withholds the rain it is a trial for everyone. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, men, women, children, beasts, birds, even the fish, as we see in the devastation the drought has wrought upon our salmon populations,” said Imam Zaid Shakir, co-founder of the Muslim, liberal arts Zaytuna College in Berkeley and an event organizer.

The fairgrounds is at 4501 Pleasanton Ave. For more information, visit http://www.cair.com/
