Parents opposed to a New Addington school's plans to only serve halal meat to children in the canteen have hailed victory after saying the school has backtracked on the idea.

Wolsey Infant and Junior Academy, on King Henry's Drive, asked parents on Monday (September 25) via a newsletter whether they approved of the change to serve meat which is killed in accordance with Islamic Law.

The idea, which the school now says was never a firm proposal, left parents outraged and a petition opposing the potential change was created online and was signed by more than 500 people.
